Climbing legend Ed Viesturs will give slide show talk

Illinois native Ed Viesturs came from the flatlands to Washington State and fell in love with mountain climbing on Mt. Rainier. His first mountaineering teacher was Lou Whittaker, twin brother of Jim Whittaker. Jim Whittaker is the first American to ever climb Mt Everest, the tallest mountain in the world.

What Viesturs did with his newfound mountaineering knowledge was nothing short of extraordinary. He climbed all 14 of the world's tallest peaks, those exceeding 8,000 meters or 26,247 feet. He became the sixth man and first American to do so without the aid of supplemental oxygen.

An entertaining and motivational account of his quest, entitled "No Shortcuts To The Top: Climbing The World's 14 Highest Peaks," will be the subject of a slide show presentation, lecture and book signing by Viesturs on Thursday, Dec. 18 at Sun Valley Opera House.

The event sponsored by Epic Quest and Zenergy starts next Thursday with the doors opening at 6:15 p.m. and the presentation at 7 p.m. Cost is $15 for Zenergy members and $20 for non-members. Tickets are available at the Zenergy front desk, and also at The Elephant's Perch and Chapter One Bookstore, also in Ketchum. Call 725-0595 ext. 105 for details.
