Carey races past Pirates 62-50 for holiday title

Carey High School boys' basketball coach Dick Simpson has a simple yardstick for measuring his team's chances of making it to the state tournament—win all your home games and half your road games and you're in the hunt.

The Panthers are off to a good start in home victories.

Carey (2-0) captured its second consecutive Carey Holiday Tournament championship and fourth title in the tourney's 13 years with a 62-50 victory over the Hagerman Pirates (2-1) Saturday night in Carey.

The Panthers, in the title game four straight years, also won the title in 2005 and 1996, both times over Mackay.

Junior Brett Adamson enjoyed his varsity breakout game with 15 of his team-high 20 points in the second half. He led three Panther players in double figures. The others in doubles were juniors Wacey Barg (14 points, 7 boards) and Dillon Simpson (11 points, 7 boards, 2 steals, 3 assists).

On Friday night, the state's best 1A Division 2 football player, senior Heith Adamson, scored a game-high 24 points lifting the Panthers over the Challis Vikings 62-48. Trevor Peck added 14 points and Brett Adamson 10 in the season-opening 14-point victory.

"Heith is a workhorse," said coach Simpson admiringly about the team's leader. "I have great hopes for these guys. We've won two games, but it's a long way from the end."

Carey has lost only one home game in the past two seasons, that to arch-rival Richfield by eight points last January, and the Panthers must travel to Richfield Friday, Dec. 12 for a big early-season Northside Conference test. Richfield (1-0) opened with a 59-55 win at 3A Wendell Saturday.

But it was all gravy and tasty holiday treats last weekend during the four-team Carey holiday meet.

Heith Adamson, who scored 58 points all last season with a single-game high of 12, went hard to the basket for 24 against Challis Friday. Other Carey scorers were Wacey Barg 4, Jacy Baird 4, Dillon Simpson 4 and Jared Cenarrusa 2.

In Friday's other opening-round game, Hagerman's 6-6 senior Tanner Owen (21.7 ppg) scored 15 as the Bucs made it into the title game 47-33 over Valley of Hazelton. Hagerman, last year's State 1A runner-up, was playing without senior guard Morgan Knight (ankle injury in pre-season action).

Carey coach Simpson said after Saturday's win, "Hagerman missed Morgan, and I think we run 'em out of air a little by the end of the game."

Hagerman's huge Owen, nearly unstoppable when he gets the ball down low in the post, tallied 10 of the 18 Pirates points in the first half. Carey got scoring from five players in the 18-18 halftime tie.

The Pirates had a much tougher time getting the ball in Owens' hands in the second half. Carey went to a 1-2-2 zone defense designed to put two players on Owen at all times—and forcing Hagerman to make its points from the perimeter.

Simpson said, "We fronted him, backed him, everybody had to play hard to keep the ball away from Owen. We tried to make 'em do it from the outside. On offense we had been a little tentative, but we started getting the idea that you have to take it to the basket."

Although Brett Adamson heated up in the third quarter with two 3-pointers, Carey couldn't pull away from Hagerman until the Panthers orchestrated an 8-1 run early in the fourth for a 48-38 lead.

Wacey Barg took a pass from Brett Adamson for a basket, then Adamson cashed in off an inbounds pass. Adamson drove the baseline, was fouled and made two charities. Another Adamson-to-Wacey Barg connection stretched the lead to 10 points, then Heith Adamson chipped in with a bank, putback and free throw for a 56-44 Carey cushion.

Carey made 10-of-15 free throws in the fourth quarter to put the Pirates away in the championship game for the second straight year. The host Panthers out-rebounded Hagerman 39-26.

Further Panther stats from the championship game were Brett Adamson (2 boards, 3 assists), Heith Adamson (9 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists), Trevor Peck (8 points, 7 boards), Jacy Baird (3 rebounds, 2 assists) and Tyler Chavez (2 boards).

Owen finished with a game-high 22 points, 11 rebounds and 3 steals. Other Pirates were Dylan Brooks (13 points, 2 assists), Jake Emerson (10 points, 3 steals, 4 assists), Ryan Luttmer (5 points, 3 rebounds) and Thomas Owsley (4 rebounds).

Valley ended up as the boys' varsity consolation winner over Challis.

Quick start for Carey JV in tourney win

Coach Danny Simpson's Carey School boys' junior varsity basketball team (2-0) launched its 2008-09 campaign in winning fashion Saturday, repeating as champs of the Carey Holiday Tournament.

The Panther defense, trailing 27-22 at half, clamped down on the Valley Vikings and won the championship game 42-37. Carey (four 3-pointers) outscored Valley 20-10 after intermission with soph Blair Peck (16 points) leading the way.

Other Carey scorers in the title game were Brandon Dilworth 9 points, Shane Bingham 6, Baley Barg 5, Joe Laidlaw 3 and Chance Chavez 3. Valley sophomore Brett Miller (9 points) topped the Viking shooters.

With scoring from nine players, Carey opened the tournament Friday night with a 65-29 cakewalk over the Challis Vikings. Valley defeated Hagerman Friday to earn a title shot.

Carey raced to a 15-2 first-quarter cushion and out-pointed Challis 28-11 in the second period for a 43-13 halftime lead. In that high-scoring second stanza, the Panthers had 13 field goals—31 for the game.

Sophomore Joe Laidlaw tallied 10 of his team-high 16 points in the first half against Challis.

Others contributing were Dillon Cenarrusa 11 points, Blair Peck 10, Caleb Cenarrusa 8, Baley Barg 6, Shane Bingham 6, Brandon Dilworth 4, Chance Chavez 2 and Jack Cenarrusa 2. Game-high scorer for Challis was Jay Parkinson (17 points).

With Camas County dropping its boys' JV team this winter, Carey's JV have to wait until Friday, Dec. 12 to play again, this time at Richfield.
