Give for giving's sake

Wow! I sure hit an altruistic nerve. It was exactly going to be my suggestion—that perhaps the mended toys could be sold at a fair of sorts. Then, indeed, I may purchase one. However, that was not the message of my letter to the editor. I stated my opinion clearly, so in this letter I will avoid being redundant. It is simply my opinion.

And, who am I? Nobody really—just another joker trying to get on the bus. Oh, and I knit, among other creative endeavors. The only reason anyone would be shocked by or defensive about my letter is because of a personal invested interest at some level. People want to feel good about their giving—and, indeed they should! Apparently some want giant pats on the back as well. However, don't pretend 'humility' (not humiliation) when the gesture is announced biweekly in the newspaper. The readers have all seen the one-eyed teddy bear with a tear running down its face. How about this for "humility"?

When you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets (or in the newspaper), to be honored by men—they have received their reward in full. But, "when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be done in secret..."

So, onward with your needles and thread ladies and gentlemen! I am sure everyone is well meaning and your efforts are to be applauded. Americans are the most prosperous and entitled people on the planet—if not the most arrogant. We are truly blessed beyond belief to live in this great nation where we can give so generously. May the blessings continue to all this holiday season.
