Students Help Make Thanksgiving Full

The Blanco family picks up a box from the Silver Creek Alternative School on Monday evening. One of more than 200 boxes picked up, it contained a turkey, potatoes, pies and much more. Alternative School teacher Jill Bailey started the Thanksgiving food drive seven years ago. Today, the five local public elementary schools and Wood River Middle School help gather food for the project. Twin Falls business Keegan Inc. donated 1,500 potatoes. John Shinkle of Bellevue, South Central Community Action in Twin Falls and the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Hailey donated turkeys. Albertson’s and Atkinsons’ donated pies and the Hunger Coalition chipped in “where there were gaps,” Bailey said. “This year with the economy bad, we needed more. Some people need more right now, You just can’t say no.” There was a line on Monday morning outside the school to pick up boxes. By evening, Hailey resident Reggie Solomon came in to help with the lifting and students Kara Cooper and Emma Burgan stayed late. “It’s really a different feeling this year,” teacher Marilyn Baybutt said.
