Sun Valley Guide heralds winter

By MICHAEL AMES
---

Winter is slow arriving this year. But if you're angling for colder, whiter days, the Winter issue of the Sun Valley Guide can deliver you there. Free copies of the Idaho Press Club's top-rated magazine are now available on news racks throughout the Wood River Valley.

The Sun Valley Guide invites readers to discover mountain life, and the winter issue celebrates our lifestyle in ways no other publication can. By harnessing the top creative talent in the state, the Guide sings out loud the joys and curiosities of life in central Idaho.

When the Castle Rock Fire marched towards his Board Ranch home, Ketchum photographer Karl Weatherly knew that opportunities would be hidden in the crisis. When nature blessed those scorched black slopes with foot after foot of light-as-air powder last winter, Weatherly risked the avalanche-prone backcountry to capture our cover shot and feature photo essay. In "Ski the Burn," Weatherly and professional telemarker Danny Walton bring the adrenaline and surreal fire-and-ice experience into sharp focus.

Earlier this month, Blaine County Sheriff Walt Femling won yet another hard-fought reelection, this time for his sixth term behind the badge. But with a starring role in Ridley Pearson's Sun Valley mystery novels, has real-life changed for the valley's top cop? In "The New Western Sheriff," veteran Guide writer Van Gordon Sauter places Femling squarely in the long lineage of small-town sheriffs, both real and imagined.

Be sure to check out the Winter issue's eye-catching activity map. "You Are Here" is a refresher for any valley visitor and the hand-drawn map by award-winning artist and cartographer E.B. Phillips offers a detailed perspective on Ketchum and Sun Valley.

The Sun Valley Guide is keeping up with a changing community. From a Ketchum cocktail lounge that resurrects heady spirits of the past to controversial public art along Highway 75, our valley is evolving. The Guide works to keep you up to speed.
