Sun Valley will hold off on opener

Colder temps at Baldy’s summit needed

By EXPRESS STAFF

Sun Valley Company has announced that it will not open its slopes this weekend after all.

So far, the weather has been too warm to allow the company to make sufficient headway on snowmaking.

Sun Valley Company spokesman Jack Sibbach told the Idaho Mountain Express Tuesday that company officials continue to meet and evaluate the situation every day.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Bald Mountain's ski report showed 9 inches at the summit of Baldy, and 6 inches at the base of the hill.

Sibbach said the resort would make a decision about the opening date as soon as it can and will pass along the information to the community and guests as soon as possible.

Since 1994, the resort has opened the lifts on Baldy seven times on Thanksgiving Day, four times before the holiday, and three times after, with a record late start date of Dec. 9 during that period.

"We've had an inversion, where the temperature at the top of the mountain is actually warmer than at the base, so there hasn't been much snowmaking," Sibbach said last week. "But we have our fingers crossed and are depending on Mother Nature."
