Bears Dumpster dive in Elkhorn

Critters delay winter sleep for easy garbage pickings

Bears continue to be spotted in Elkhorn, as they raid garbage cans for easy pickings

"We've had two more Dumpster-diving bears," Sun Valley Police Chief Cameron Daggett said Monday. "Both of them were last week on Thursday and Monday at The Ranch condominiums."

More than the usual number of bears have been reported searching for food this fall in Sun Valley and Elkhorn. Daggett speculated that "the weather's too nice and they're just not going to sleep very fast."

The bears haven't really caused any problems, other than "just tipping over garbage," Daggett said. "We're advising people to be a little more cautious about leaving food items around."
