Stocking presents

Last Wednesday, about eight volunteers, including Canten Laird, pictured, helped the Hunger Coalition move thousands of pounds of food from a small donated room in the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare building in Bellevue to a new 1,430-square-foot food bank space. The new facility includes an office upstairs for Executive Director Jeanne Liston and two full-time staff members. “We will soon start placing orders from large food-relief organizations in Boise to fully stock the shelves,” Liston said. “As the economy worsens, we are finding it harder to meet the needs of the community. We're projected to nearly triple the amount of food given out this year from approximately 14,500 meals served last year to more than 40,000 meals served this year.” To volunteer or make a donation, call Food Program Manager Naomi Spence at 720-5932 or Liston at 720-8701.
