Sports summary


Runners take part in Nike Cross Nationals at Eagle Island

Ten high school runners who competed for the Wood River High School cross country team this past fall returned to Eagle Island State Park west of Boise Saturday for the Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) Northwest Championships. There were 760 runners from six states. The Wood River runners with coach Patty Brothwell competed under the banner of Team High Altitude.

In the 195-runner Boys' Open 5-kilometer 3.1-mile race, Chase Caulkins (16:36) was fourth overall running at a rapid clip of five minutes and 20 seconds for each mile.

Caulkins was only eight seconds off the winning time for the lower-level race. Other placings and times for Team High Altitude boys (10th place of 19 teams) were James Paris 45th in 17:28, Danny Sundali 76th in 17:56, Andrew Pfeiffer 101st in 18:14, Dale McLaughlin 140th in 18:44 and Greg LeBlanc 193rd in 21:58.

Placers in the girls' 5k event included Tristin Bowers 12th of 42 finishers in 21:35, Corrine Smith 20th in 22:27, Brooke Bowers 34th in 24:57 and Dani McLaughlin 36th in 25:18.

Atkinson Park swimmers travel to Logan, Utah

Swim coach Ed Flory traveled with seven Atkinson Park Recreation Program kids to Logan, Utah Nov. 8 for the Cache Valley Invitational swim meet. For many of the young kids, it was their first competition.

Here are their placings by class:

Girls' 11-12: Olivia Wentzell 7th 50 back, 7th 50 breast, 11th 100 Individual Medley (IM) and 12th 50 free; Loni Unser 6th 50 breast, 13th 50 free and 14th 100 IM.

Boys' 10-and-under: Ike Buxton 6th 100 free, 6th 50 breast and 9th 50 free; Logan Jones-Wilkins 3rd 50 breast, 7th 100 IM, 7th 100 free, 8th 50 back and 14th 50 free; Cooper Roquet 4th 50 breast, 5th 100 free and 10th 50 free; Charlie Stumph 7th 50 back, 8th 100 free and 11th 50 free.

Girls' 10-and-under: Brooke Beckwith 3rd 100 IM, 4th 100 free, 6th 50 free and 7th 50 back.

Boys' 6-and-under: Fletcher Stumph 1st 50 free.

Turkey Trot is Nov. 27

Need a way to burn off the Thanksgiving stuffing and mashed potatoes?

The fifth annual Hailey Turkey Trot 5k Fun Run and Walk is Thursday, Nov. 27, rain or shine. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and start and finish at the CSI Community Campus in Hailey. Registration through Nov. 26, is $15 per person, or $40 per family of five. Day of race signup costs $30 per person or $70 per family.

Pre-register at www.active.com, or in person at Blaine County Title in Hailey. Entry includes a Turkey Trot beanie, coffee and hot chocolate and raffle prizes. Donations of non-perishable items to help restock the pantry at Souper Supper will also be collected at the race start.

Bib bag pick up is Wednesday, Nov. 26 at the Hailey Blaine County Title (located in the E.G. Willis building above Shorty's) from 8 a.m to 6 p.m.

"It's a great family tradition for the whole valley," organizer Daryl Fauth said. "Last year we had over 400 participants."

Last year's champions were locals Brad Mitchell in 17:58, and Kitty Marcroft in 19:42.

Soldier Mountain cheerleaders in action

The Soldier Mountain All-Star competitive cheerleaders from Spirit n'Motion Athletic School in Hailey, just returned from their first regional competition. It was called the Western Idaho Cheer Competition held in Boise Saturday, Nov. 15.

The Dazzling Dancers (Competitive Jazz dance team) took first place. Also placing first in its division was the Silver Stars Cheer Team (ages 6-11). The Black Diamonds Cheer Team (ages 7-14) captured second place in its division only one point out of first place.

Isabel Romero and Hunter Schiermeier took first place on their Duo Best Competition and Kami Norbom was fourth on her Individual Best Competition. Coaches Amanda Norton, Julie Brown, Kassidy Brice and Heath Norton were extremely proud of their teams.

SMAS plans to host the Altitute with Attitude Cheer and Dance Challenge in Hailey at The Community Campus on Saturday, Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The fun day of cheer, dance, and gymnastics will be SMAS's first time hosting a regional competition.

Registration will be taken at the Dec. 13 event for SMAS's winter/spring programs for non-competitive cheer, mommy and me, preschool, tumbling, dance, and boys classes.
