The Idaho chapter of the American Institute of Architects has presented its 2008 Award of Honor to John King of Williams Partners in Ketchum for a residence in Boise.
The biennial award was presented during a ceremony on Friday, Oct. 24, at the Linen Building in Boise. Three nationally recognized architects—William Kreager of Seattle, Bill Bowler of Idaho and David Houston of Denver—acted as the jury.
"What makes this special is that architects in other sections of the state are kind of jealous of the mountain section because they think we have these really high budgets and can do anything," said Jeff Williams, a principal with Williams Architects. "This one was done very moderately. That's why they gave it this award. We really showed you can do good design work on a limited budget."
Williams was also awarded two Citation Awards for the McGowen/O'Malley residence in the mid-Wood River Valley and the Posada residence in the Pahsimeroi Valley of central Idaho. The McGowen/O'Malley Residence was also given the Emerging Professional Award.
"We were so pleased and impressed with the quality of all the entries for the 2008 competition," said Ed Daniels, 2008 AIA Idaho design awards chairman. "This demonstrates the growing statewide commitment to intelligent and creative architectural design."
McLaughlin and Associates Architects of Sun Valley won the 2008 Award of Merit for the new Our Lady of the Snows in Sun Valley. As well, Ketchum-based Ruscitto/Latham/Blanton Architects won two Citation Awards for the Rocky Mountain Hardware building in Hailey and the Sun Valley Music Pavilion.
The AIA design awards are given out every two years to highlight exemplary architectural work and to increase public awareness about architectural design.
Williams also won the 2004 and 1996 Award of Merit and the 2002 Award of Citation.
The AIA Idaho Chapter was founded in 1951 and represents over 300 licensed architects and associated professionals.
