Softball, volleyball as senior projects

Students offer a clinic, tournament

Thirty girls ages 11-15 had some good coaching from Wood River High School volleyball players during Kaylee Baker’s volleyball clinic Saturday at the middle school in Hailey.

Two Wood River High School student/athletes are doing something a little different for their senior projects—and they're inviting the community to join and have fun.

Wolverine fast-pitch softball hurler Samantha Engel will present a free pitching clinic for kids ages 8-18 Saturday, Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in the Hailey high school gym. Instructors will be Wood River softball coach Dale Martin and pitching coach Ray Vadalma.

Call Engel at 720-9608 or email at samantha.k.engel@gmail.com for more details.

Wood River volleyball senior co-captain Angela Coleman is organizing a four-on-four volleyball tournament for Saturday, Nov. 8 starting at 12 noon in the high school gym.

Adult co-ed teams along with teams for kids in grades 7-12 are invited.

You must be registered by Sunday, Nov. 2. The cost is $20 for youth teams and $40 for adult teams. All proceeds will be donated to the Sun Valley Adaptive Sports program.

Teams for the one-day fundraiser will be divided into three separate pools—high school, middle school and adults. There will be prizes offered for first place and second place.

Contact Coleman at 720-5382 or email acoleman2009@yahoo.com.

Be sure to call ahead for sign-ups and to receive team information packets.

Kaylee's volleyball clinic

A volleyball clinic for all ages was held as part of Kaylee Baker's senior project Saturday, Oct. 25 at Wood River Middle School. There were 30 girls ranging from ages 11-15.

Baker said, "In the morning we started off with stations of passing, setting, hitting and serving. After lunch we finished off with some games and the girls were presented with certificates of participation."

"The goal was to promote the sport of volleyball and spur the interest and gain better understanding of the game in younger players," said Baker, a senior co-captain for the state tournament-bound Wood River Wolverine varsity team.
