Fun on the gridiron

WR youth football wraps up

Wood River Youth Football 9- to 12-year-old teams finished up a fun and memorable 2008 season with games played last weekend, on Oct. 18.

The following game reports and results were edited from woodriveryouthfootball.com:

WR Juniors: Won 26-24 over Idaho Camera of Boise, at Boise Optimist Park. WR Juniors (4-3) played perhaps their best game of the year.

On the team during the memorable season were Logan Portillo, Gage Jorgensen, Corban Johnson, River Curtis, Journey Iverson, Kole Mauldin, Jack Rizzo, Anders Fortuin, Hayden Thayer, Ryan Kotiga, Austin Savaria, Zachary Swanson, Junior Solis, Cody Carter, Hagan Barsch, Hayes Gilman, Jackson Toothman, Dustin Morgan, Austin Krenz, Omar Salamanca, Colton Smith, River Kelly, Sam Burns, Tristan Kulhanek and Cutter Grathwohl. The coaches were Andy Portillo, Randy Jorgensen, Troy Thayer, George Rizzo and Doug Kulhanek.

WR Sophomores: Lost 12-6 to Boise Police.

It was a back-and-forth battle, WR scoring first with a touchdown by Dylan Broman. Boise tied it 6-6 by halftime and added another score in the second half. Making great defensive tackles were Nic Tidwell, Parker Jones and Jake Jorgensen. Clicking offensively were Walker Whaley, Jack Goodwin and Alec Nordsieck.

WR Sophs coached by Tim Flaherty, Boomer Gibson and Jeff Whaley ended an outstanding year with a 5-2 record.

WR Freshman White: Won 20-8 over Access Living in Kuna.

Jett Erickson's 45-yard run led to the first WR score, a quarterback sneak by Cade Schott. In the second quarter John Blackburn tallied his first-ever TD, a 32-yard sweep. Schott scored the third TD with a QB bootleg and Tor Dalzell added the 2-point conversion. Because the WR offense controlled the ball for such long periods, the defense stopped Access Living from making many first downs. Leading the way on defense were Jacob Bulotti (3 QB sacks), Kyle Nelson, Joseph Anderson, Cade Street and Matt Galgano.

WR Freshman Green: Won 12-8 over Kuna.

In a tough defensive battle, WR scored first when Owen Gifford made a hard-charging run just before halftime. Kuna crept ahead 8-6 in the third quarter but the Green defense held strong afterward. A kickoff return by Toby Whitworth gave WR good field position at the 45, then Owen Gifford took the ball on a reverse and ran to the Kuna 6-yard-line. He rushed the ball into the end zone for the final TD.
