Final game arrives Friday for Hailey grid team

It's not a great way to spend the season's final two games.

Wood River High School's football team lost 54-7 Friday to a red-hot Hillcrest Knights squad in Idaho Falls. And the Wolverines will be playing this Friday against a smokin' hot Jerome team that got smoked by Minico 42-28 last week.

Game time is 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24 for the Wood River season finale on the Jerome field.

Coach Mike Glenn's Wolverines (1-6, 0-2 league) lost by only an 18-17 score on their last trip to Jerome in 2006, but the score isn't likely to be as close this time around—not with coach Gary Krumm's Tigers (5-2, 1-1) fuming after their 14-point loss to Minico in Rupert last Friday.

Ranked fifth in the Idahosports.com 4A poll, Minico (6-1, 3-0) by beating Jerome on its home field captured its fourth consecutive Great Basin Conference West title and stretched its GBW league winning streak to 12 games dating back to 2004.

The outcome relegated Jerome to second place in the GBW for a third straight year. It gave the Tigers a Great Eight Playoffs first-round date Oct. 31 with the loser of this Friday's Blackfoot-Hillcrest Sixth District finale, a championship game to be played in Blackfoot.

Ranked second in the 4A poll, Hillcrest (6-1, 2-0 league) tuned up for its big clash with top-ranked Blackfoot (7-1, 2-0) by spotting Wood River an early touchdown and putting 33 points on the board in the second quarter for a 47-7 lead.

Senior Sean Bunce (48 yards rushing) scored the first touchdown of the game and junior quarterback Juan Martinez completed five passes for 89 yards at Hillcrest.

Coach Glenn said, "We had excellent execution on that first touchdown drive."
