Protect your home from the threat of wildfire

Blaine County Firewise to hold Living on the Edge workshop next week

A public workshop meant to help homeowners living in wildfire-threatened areas reduce the threat to their properties will be held Thursday, Oct. 23.

Scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon at the Community Campus in Hailey, the Living on the Edge workshop is sponsored by Blaine County Firewise.

The Living on the Edge program is a community-education program developed in response to the increasing risk posed by wildfire to life and property in rural communities. Local residents who live and work in the wildland-urban interface need to understand the issues involved in living safely in these fire-prone areas, a brochure released by Blaine County Firewise states.

The wildland-urban interface is the area where homes or other buildings meet forest or other natural fuels.

Since 2004, Blaine County Firewise, led by Angie Grant-Kettleband, has been working to make sure local homes in the wildland urban interface are better prepared for the threat of wildfire.

The firewise program is primarily concerned with a home's defensible space. That is the area between a house and an oncoming wildfire where vegetation has been modified to reduce the wildfire threat and to provide an opportunity for firefighters to effectively defend the structure.

For additional information or to register for the workshop, contact Angie Grant-Kettleband at (208) 309-2006. Information is also available at www.bcfirewise.com.
