Cutthroat runners sweep first home meet

At Sagewillow Farms


Thursday's first-ever Community School Invitational prep cross country meet at Sagewillow Farms in Elkhorn was a success for the home runners from Sun Valley.

Coach Rick Kapala's Cutthroats were team winners in the boys' and girls' team races.

Individual medalists in the 3.1-mile high school races were Bryce Beard of Filer (17:45) and Sasha Kent of Richfield (22:05). Winning the middle school races were Zach Lindahl (9:57) and Alexa Szombathy (11:46) of The Community School.

In all, there were 73 runners.

Kapala said, "Many thanks to the teams that attended the first-ever Community School Invitational. We were able to offer a challenging course with a variety of terrain and great views in all directions."

The Cutthroat thinclads traveled to the Gooding Invitational Tuesday.

WRHS thinclads warm up on a cold day

Friday's three-school prep cross country meet on a flat Ross Park course in Pocatello was a good opportunity for the Wood River High School thinclads to prepare for the upcoming Oct. 23 conference meet, also to be held in the Gate City.

The 29 Wolverines of coaches Joel Zellers, Monte Brothwell and Shari Kunz performed well on a sunny but frigid day. The top Wolverine boys placed 1-2-3 and won the team title 33-36 over Preston. The girls, ranked fifth in the state, finished in second place.

Wood River High junior Chase Caulkins, ranked sixth statewide in the Oct. 7 Idaho 4A poll of top runners, won Friday's Pocatello meet by 24 seconds with a time of 16:58. Senior Julia Bowman, ranked 15th statewide, was fourth of 43 runners with a 20:40 clocking.

Next up: The Mountain Home Invitational Thursday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. at Desert Canyon Golf Course along I-84.
