Cutthroat girls stay home, and boys don’t

High Desert soccer starts Saturday

The Community School girls continued to roll, and the Cutthroat boys continued to tie.

Wednesday's season-ending High Desert Soccer Conference games finalized the seedings for the seven-team HDSC girls' and boys' tournaments starting Saturday, Oct. 11.

The games at Declo, Sun Valley's girls winning 4-0 and the boys tying 1-1, also crystallized the successes of the Sun Valley girls and the frustrations of the boys in the final stretch of the 2008 fall season.

Now seeded second in the league, coach Kelly Feldman's Cutthroats (10-5-1, 10-1-1 league) will play #7-seeded Gooding Saturday at 3 p.m. at Sagewillow Farms in Elkhorn. The streaking Sun Valley girls (8 shutouts) have won eight of their last nine by a 41-5 margin.

Winless since Sept. 17, coach Richard Whitelaw's Cutthroat boys (4-7-5, 4-4-4) have struggled with offense and those woes were front-and-center Wednesday at Declo. If they had won, the Fish would have hosted a first-round tournament game Saturday. But the 1-1 tie gave that host role to Gooding, a 3-1 winner at Filer Wednesday.

So, the #5-seeded Cutthroat boys will play at #4-seeded Gooding Saturday at 11 a.m., the loser eliminated from the tournament and the winner advancing to meet #1-seeded Wendell Monday, Oct. 13 at 4:30 p.m., at Wendell.

At Declo, freshman Tim Kanellitsas scored his first-ever varsity goal in the 1-1 tie. "Man of the Match" was defender Dane Inman. And senior Alex Conn started his 72nd varsity match, beating the previous record of 71 starts held by Taylor Rothgeb and Travis Stone.

Whitelaw said, "What is even more remarkable is that Alex has started and played every minute of the last 45 games. What a wonderful achievement! Well done, Alex!"
