Thinclads return to Canyon Springs

For Kleinkopf Classic


The five-race winning streak of Jerome's Mackenzie Chojnacky came to an end Wednesday during the Jerry Kleinkopf Invitational prep cross-country races at Canyon Springs Golf Course in Twin Falls.

Chojnacky (20:22) finished seventh in the girls' varsity race, 39 seconds behind winner Kaylee Campbell of Preston (19:43), currently the #3-ranked 4A girls' runner in the Idahoxc.com poll. Wood River's Julia Bowman (21:05) was 15th.

Wood River High junior Chase Caulkins, ranked eighth in the Idaho 4A poll of top runners, ended up 11th in Wednesday's 3.1-mile race with a time of 16:58, 38 seconds behind winner Barak Watson of Columbia High School. Actually, Watson (16:20) and teammate Lars Lunstrum of Columbia (16:20) finished in a dead heat.

The host Twin Falls Bruins won the team championships Wednesday. The Twin Falls boys (69) nipped Highland of Pocatello (71) with Wood River (257) ninth of 21 schools. The Twin girls (96) ran past Soda Springs (102) with Wood River sixth (203) of 24 girls' schools.

Next up: Wood River travels east for the Ririe Challenge at Ririe Dam on Wednesday, Oct. 8. The middle school runners start at 3 p.m. followed by the junior varsity and varsity.

The Community School stages its own home meet Thursday, Oct. 9 on a new course at Sagewillow Athletic Complex, Elkhorn. Schools due include Valley of Hazelton, Bliss, Filer and Richfield. Middle school racers go at 4 p.m., girls 4:30 p.m. and boys 5 p.m.
