WRHS volleyball downs Jerome in three

Spikers move to 4-0 in league

The Wood River High School volleyball team is controlling its own destiny at the most important time of the year.

"We've got to win at least one more match (at Minico Oct. 7 or home vs. Burley Oct. 14) to make sure we have the homecourt for the tournament," said coach Tim Richards.

Two-time defending Great Basin West champ Wood River (12-7, 4-0 league) stayed unbeaten in Great Basin Conference West action with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-18 win over Jerome's Tigers (4-7, 1-3) at Filer.

Sparking the well-balanced Wolverine hitting attack were Kaylee Baker (8 kills, 3 stuff blocks for points), Hanna Gustafson (8 kills, 3 stuffed blocks for points), Angela Coleman (7 kills) and Grace Lagodich (4 kills).

Wood River's passing wasn't great during Tuesday's triangular meet at Filer, coach Tim Richards said, but its serving against Jerome was tough led by Haleigh Hall (3 aces) and Kylie Anderson (2 aces).

In another match, the Filer Wildcats (22-4) downed Wood River 25-14, 20-25, 15-6.

Wood River travels to the 25-team Maverick Invitational Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3-4 in the Boise area. Starting at 4 p.m. today at Meridian High School gym, the Wolverines will compete in a pool with Meridian, Vallivue of Caldwell, Twin Falls and Payette.

Richards said, "We'll try to jell as a team and work on our fundamentals this weekend."

Sawtooth spikers

The Community School and Carey School varsity volleyball teams dropped Sawtooth Conference matches Tuesday.

But the Cutthroats (0-9, 0-8 league) picked it up a notch by winning the first two games in a 21-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-9, 15-10 setback at Murtaugh. Carey (7-7, 4-5) dropped a 25-10, 25-17, 25-21 match at Dietrich.
