Palmer, Wilander lift Cutthroats over Buhl 3-2

Tribe falls for first time on late goal

The Community School girls' soccer team came back "fresh and ready" from its 10-day break for school trips, coach Kelly Feldman said.

And the Cutthroats put together "great work ethic" and team play for 80 minutes in a 3-2 High Desert Soccer Conference victory at previously unbeaten Buhl Monday afternoon.

Freshman Teagen Palmer (14 goals season) scored twice including a first-half penalty and sophomore Emma Wilander tallied the game winner on a Kelly Hennessy pass with five minutes left in regulation.

"It was a big win for our team," said Feldman. "We tried to dominate the midfield and were effective in shutting down Buhl's breakaway attacks."

Speedy Buhl forwards Autumn Yturbe and Mercedes Pearson are normally the recipients of Buhl's kick-and-run offense that had outscored 10 opponents 45-3 entering Monday's game. Buhl is ranked #1 in the Idahosports.com poll.

Yturbe broke loose for two goals Monday, but that's all Buhl could manage against the stingy Cutthroat defense led by stopper Hennessy, left back Hailey Rheinschild and sweeper Marin Shepardson.

Buhl (10-1-0, 8-1-0) stayed atop the High Desert league, but the Cutthroats (7-5-1, 7-1-1) stayed hot on the Tribe's heels. The #5-ranked Cutthroats host Bliss today, Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Sagewillow Farms while Buhl goes to Wendell.

Buhl boys hang on 2-1

Coach Richard Whitelaw's Cutthroat boys (4-6-3, 4-3-2 league) returned to action Monday with a 2-1 loss at Buhl. Alex Conn scored in the second half for the Fish, who hadn't been beaten in their last four league games dating back to a 3-1 home loss to Buhl Sept. 4.

Buhl (6-2-3, 5-1-3) takes its league championship hopes to league-leading Wendell (7-1-1, 7-1-1) today, Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Cutthroats host Bliss (7-3-1, 6-2-1) in a big High Desert encounter today at 6 p.m. at Browning Field. The Fish and Bliss played to a 2-2 tie at Bliss Sept. 12. Bliss will come to Sun Valley after 5-0, 4-1 and 4-0 wins over Buhl, Gooding and Declo—interrupted by a 3-2 loss to Filer (2-12-0, 1-9-0).
