Dispute turns ugly

Man accused of pulling a gun during argument over dogs

A dispute over the weekend in east Hailey led to a felony charge against a 49-year-old man after he allegedly pulled a gun on his neighbors.

Pete Malarkey was arraigned Monday in Blaine County Magistrate Court on a charge of felony aggravated assault. He was also charged with misdemeanor domestic violence in the presence of a child for allegedly pushing his wife during the incident.

Hailey police reported that they were called to Aspen Valley Drive in east Hailey at about 6:40 p.m. Saturday.

"The one neighbor confronted the other neighbor with a handgun," said Hailey Assistant Police Chief Dave Stellers. "Apparently Mr. Malarkey's child was outside and the neighbor's dogs came over into his yard and scared his daughter and he got angry."

Stellers said that two dogs, "resembling pit bulls," wandered across the street from the home of Heather Angel and Tyler Watson.

Stellers said a shouting match ensued and Malarkey allegedly brought a handgun out of his home and pointed it at Angel and Watson.

At some point during the confrontation, Malarkey allegedly shoved his wife in the presence of his 8-year-old daughter.

Malarkey was arrested after police arrived and parties involved were interviewed.

Malarkey remained incarcerated in Blaine County Jail until his arraignment Monday afternoon. He was later released after posting $5,000 bond.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for 9 a.m. on Oct. 1.
