Cyclists climb Bogus Basin for time

36th running of the lung-busting ascent

World Masters time trial champion Richard Feldman of Ketchum set the early pace, but Boise's Eric Anderson of Vertical Earth ended up with the victory Saturday, Sept. 6 in the 36th Bogus Basin Hill Climb.

Anderson (55 minutes, 10 seconds) was the overall winner of the 14.5-mile Bogus Basin Road ascent, which had a 9:30 a.m. mass start Saturday from Highland Elementary School. There was 3,500 feet of elevation gain.

Bragging rights were the only thing at stake for the 328 cyclists in an event sponsored by George's Cycling and Fitness of Boise. It benefited the Davis Phinney Foundation.

Durance Cycleworks/Lehman Brothers cyclist Feldman finished fourth overall and second in Anderson's 35-39 age class with a time of 56:01, 51 seconds off the winning pace. Women's winner was Olympic time trial gold medalist Kristin Armstrong Savola of Boise in 57:45.

Besides Feldman, 16 other Wood River Valley cyclists made the climb—and two others cracked the top 10. They were Miles Fink-Debray, sixth overall and third in the 19-29 class in 56:03, and Brandon Lynch, eighth overall and second in the 30-34 class in 56:40.

Also climbing the podium were Men's 50-59 class winner Blair Clark of Hailey, Joshua Berry, Bill Nurge and John Swyers. Former Ketchum athlete Michael Tobin of Boise (59:21) was second in the Men's 40-44 class, behind Joe Savola of Boise, Armstrong's husband.
