Picnic with Howard, Land Trust

By DANA DUGAN

The Wood River Land Trust will hold its annual Community Picnic at Howard Preserve, in Bellevue on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 4 to 7 p.m. This year there will be a special attendee.

Overseeing the food for the picnic will be Mike Howard, owner of the Inn at Tres Pinos in San Benito County, Calif. Howard's family bought the land in Bellevue in 1972.

"He will be making Lava Lake lamb, California quail, and an assortment of other delicious things," said Heather Kimmel, program coordinator of the Wood River Land Trust. "It's a great event, right along the Big Wood in Bellevue. Howard will be providing most of the food and doing the cooking along with his staff."

The Howard Preserve was purchased by the city of Bellevue in 2004 with the help of the Wood River Land Trust and the Howard family. Since then, the popularity of the riverside parcel has grown exponentially. There are abundant recreational and wildlife-viewing opportunities on the 12.57-acre stretch of riparian habitat.

The event is free, but a potluck desert to share is requested. As well, there will be music by the bluegrass band Slow Children Playing.

The Wood River Land Trust protects and restores land, water and wildlife habitat in the Wood River Valley and its surrounding areas.

For more information call Kimmel at 788-3947.
