Information on perpetrator now worth $2,000

A reward for information about a hit-and-run dog killing last week in Hailey had increased to $2,000 by Monday morning after more folks chipped in funds to find the perpetrator.

"Hopefully we're getting up to a point where someone will rat them out," said Hailey Police Chief Jeff Gunter.

The dog, a 5-year-old chocolate Labrador named Hanna, was killed on the bike path the evening of Monday, Sept. 1, near the intersection of Fifth and Silver streets. Hailey resident Ken Martin reported that he was walking with Hanna on the path around 11 p.m. when a vehicle with its lights off came roaring down the path at an estimated speed of 40 miles per hour. Martin managed to jump out of its path but Hanna didn't make it in time.

"It was so dark and it all happened so fast I couldn't get a description," Martin said last week.

The $2,000 reward is payable for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver. Information can be provided to the Hailey Police Department at 788-3531.

Gunter said the driver could face misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and illegal use of the bike path.
