Sports Summary

Headmaster second in Wasatch 100-miler

You could hardly blame Community School headmaster Andy Jones-Wilkins for stretching out on the Browning Field grass instead of standing up Monday afternoon to watch the Cutthroat boys play soccer.

Jones-Wilkins, 40, spent plenty of time on his feet Saturday. He placed second of 162 finishers with a time of 21 hours, 31 minutes and 51 seconds in the Wasatch Front 100-Mile Endurance Run from Kaysville to Midway, Utah.

He was nearly an hour faster than his time on the Wasatch course two years ago. Jones-Wilkins finished behind winner Geoff Roes, 32, of Alaska (20.01:07) on the point-to-point course in the scenic central Wasatch mountain range.

A total 241 runners started Saturday at 5 a.m. and finished later in the day after climbing a total 26,888 feet and descending 26,131 feet. Jones-Wilkins won the Masters Division. It was his 20th 100-Mile Endurance Run finish, in 20 attempts.

Farrington is top Yank in New Zealand

U.S. Snowboarding rookie Kaitlyn Farrington of Bellevue threw her season into high gear by finishing sixth in halfpipe, her best World Cup result to date, as snowboarding kicked off its 2008-09 season Sunday.

In her first appearance in a World Cup final, the Westminster College student led the U.S. Snowboarding rookies in front of an enormous who crowd of spectators in New Zealand. The athletes are currently in New Zealand for a training camp.

"I'm super stoked because I finally made it to finals. I competed in some Canadian World Cups last season but I never made it past the first round," said Farrington, a Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation rider. "I'm happy that I made it all the way to finals and I'm glad I got to experience it."

According to U.S. Snowboarding Freestyle Development coach Bud Keene, Farrington fell during her Air to fakie, cab 7, frontside 5, backside 5, frontside 7 combo and settled for sixth, though she put her all into the run.

Shiho Nakashima of Japan won the women's event followed by Sina Candrian of Switzerland in second and Norwegian Linn Haug in third.

The World Cup snowboarding continues Sept. 13 in Chapelco, Argentina for the start of the snowboardcross Cup season. Halfpipe continues in October in Switzerland.

Bicyclists, it's a big weekend

There's a slightly shorter course for the Trail Creek Time Trial sponsored by The Elephant's Perch of Ketchum. And the same Phantom Hill climb and scenic vistas for the annual Boulder Mountain Bike Tour.

Both events will keep bicyclists busy this weekend as fall colors arrive in the Ketchum environs and Sawtooth National Recreation Area.

The Perch's 10.4-mile Trail Creek Time Trial on Saturday, Sept. 13 starts at 9 a.m. at Corral Creek five miles east of Ketchum and offers a 850-foot vertical gain to the finish out by the beaver ponds. It's slightly shorter because of a new turnaround.

Saturday's event is open to everyone with a bike, whether you're a U.S.C.F.-licensed rider or a one-day licensed citizen rider. Cost is $10, paid Friday until 6 p.m. at the Perch in Ketchum or on race morning prior to 8:30 a.m. at Corral Creek.

The sequence of starting (all racers are responsible for making their start) goes from Citizen Men and Women in the 19-and-under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60-plus classes, to Juniors, Women, Masters and, lastly, to Category racers.

Pella has donated cash awards to the winners, and there will be drawings for the entire field. Sponsors are The Elephant's Perch, Smith, Specialized, Blaine County Recreation District and Durance Cycleworks.

Please, park in Ketchum and use the ride out to Corral Creek for warm-up on Saturday morning.

On Sunday, Sept. 14, the Boulder Mountain Bike Tour starts for mountain bikers at 9 a.m. from the SNRA headquarters eight miles north of Ketchum, and for road bikers at 10 a.m. from Ketchum Town Square. There is no registration. Just ride to Galena and enjoy the colors.
