Wood River girls rolls over Minico

Sophomore striker Tanner Drudge of Wood River, shown here playing in the team’s opener against Skyview of Nampa, scored five goals against Minico.

One of the demoralizing duties in a soccer game is digging the ball out of the back of the net after your team has been scored upon. Unfortunately for Minico goalkeepers, the Spartans had to perform the ignominious task 25 times during the varsity and junior varsity matches against the Wood River girls Wednesday in Hailey.

With five goals from sophomore left wing Tanner Dredge and three from senior Amie Evans, Wood River varsity blanked league rival Minico 12-0 to run their overall record against the Spartans to 23-0, with 20 shutouts, dating back to 1995. Freshman KT Martinez recorded her first-ever varsity goal. Solo shots were also slotted by Taylor Hayes, Delaney Fox and Maddie Kate Currie.

Leading 6-0 at halftime with the game well in hand, coach Greg Gvozdas said the team tried to implement better ball movement and passing.

"I think we were able to handle their pressure and move the ball effectively," Gvozdas said.

Gvozdas was also pleased with his junior varsity's 13-0 victory, noting, "It's great to see some talent on the horizon."

Looming on the horizon for Wood River (3-1, 1-0 league) is The Community School. The teams meet tomorrow at Sagewillow Farms in Sun Valley.

"Being on the road is always a challenge, and there is always a lot of emotion surrounding that game," Gvozdas said. "We need to control that and let the soccer take care of itself."
