Wolverine girls’ volleyball off to a good start

At 6 feet tall, Wood River Senior Kaylee Baker goes in for the kill.

The Wood River High School Varsity girls' volleyball team started the season with a bang, defeating Buhl in three straight matches. The final scores of the three sets were 25-7, 25-18 and 25-21.

Head coach Tim Richards said he was more than pleased with the results from Tuesday's game.

"It went really well," Richards said. "It's always interesting to watch the first game because you don't really know what you're going to get because everyone is a little rusty."

Richards was quick to point out that no single player was key to the Wolverines' victory. The team had 10 players in rotation, and Richards said each player had something to bring to the table.

"What is nice about this team is that everyone contributes," he said.

Last year the team had a winning record of 20-13. This season Richard hopes to keep a winning record, but also to look beyond wins and losses.

"We want to make our best better," he said.

Victory over Buhl is a good start for the team as Buhl is a potential contender in its division, having made it to state the past few years.

This weekend, however, the competition stiffens as the Wolverines compete in the Peg Peterson tournament. Sixteen teams from three different divisions will attend. The Wolverines are scheduled to play Rigby, a team that barely beat them in a five-set match last year at state.

While Richards made no predictions for the tournament, he did say it should be a good experience.

"It will be a nice chance for us to have a rematch against Rigby," he said. "And we'll have to adjust quickly. Play a match, see where we need to improve and then make that adjustment."

The Peg Peterson tournament takes place at Highland High School on Friday, Sept. 5, and Saturday, Sept. 6.
