Fish In A Barrel

Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter, Jeff Heindell and Director Cal Groen of Idaho Fish and Game release sockeye to spawn in Redfish Lake on Tuesday. Otter was on hand for the release of about 56 adult sockeye salmon into Redfish. More than 500 sockeye had arrived at fish traps near the Sawtooth Fish Hatchery near Redfish Lake by last week, information provided by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game indicates. That’s nearly double the next highest run in recent decades. But salmon advocates said it will take more than the release of hatchery adults to restore the fish. “We must recognize that today’s release of hatchery adults will not restore the Redfish Lake sockeye population,” said Tom Stuart, a salmon advocate and Stanley business owner. “If state and federal officials are serious about restoring Redfish Lake sockeye, they must address the mortality caused by the lower Snake River dams in Eastern Washington. That’s the limiting factor.”
