Sports summary


Pro cyclist Harrison on top in two mountain bike series

Fairfield's professional mountain bike racer Dave Harrison has won the Pro Men's season titles of both the Knobby Tire Series and Wild Rockies Series of 2008 races. DollarHide Bike Shop owner Harrison (195 points) won the Knobby Tire series by 47 points over Boise's Keith Hickerson. Harrison (632 points) was a narrow eight-point winner of Ryan Butterfield in the Wild Rockies.

Harrison finished his season Aug. 23 in the Idaho State Championship cross-country finals at Tamarack Resort and Aug. 24 at the "Wild Ride" Xterra off-road triathlon in McCall. In the Aug. 23 race, Hickerson (2.18:00) and Harrison (2.24:00) placed 1-2 in Pro Male. Ketchum's Eric Chizum (1.47:00) won Sport 19-29 Male. In the "Wild Ride," Harrison (2.42:57) won the Men's 40-44 class and was third overall behind Grant Folske of Beaverton, Ore. (2.39:45). Ketchum's Ryan Still (3.16:46) finished fourth in the Men's 35-59 age class.

Pocatello half marathoner

Hailey's Jeff Ealey, 46, finished 16th of 213 runners at the half-marathon (13.1 miles) distance of Saturday's Idaho State Journal Pocatello Marathon "Running the Gap," event. Ealey (1.38:46) was third in his age group. There were 850 participants including 175 marathon (26.2 miles) finishers, 100 at 10 kilometers and 170 at 5k.

Croy Creek fun run Sunday

Rotarun Ski Area and the Hailey Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring a Croy Creek fun run covering a four-mile course on Sunday, Sept. 7. It will begin at 9 a.m. at the BMX Park on the backside of Rotarun, west of Hailey. Runners are encouraged to park at the Park & Ride lot in Hailey and use the free shuttle. Cost is $10 adults, $5 for kids 15-and-under. Register in advance at Sturtevants in Hailey or Ketchum, on the morning of the race.

Apple's bash for world champs Rusch and Martin

Apple's Bar & Grill in Ketchum will stage a gala celebration for Solo 24 Hours of Adrenalin world champions Rebecca Rusch and Greg Martin at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13. The party will feature music, food and party favors from Rusch's sponsors.

Baseball, softball group looks for volunteers

The Wood River Baseball Softball Association (WRBSA) is looking for volunteers. Several board positions are available including vice president, secretary, softball director and Babe Ruth director. Trout Unlimited presents fishing slide show

Professional photographer and fishing guide Todd Kaplan plans to show you how to take quality photos of your fish and fishing trips. He'll talk to outdoor enthusiasts Thursday, Sept. 4 from 5-7 p.m. at Roosevelt Restaurant in Ketchum as part of Trout Unlimited's monthly meeting.

Rim to Rim 7.5-miler is Sept. 13

Runners will head to Twin Falls Saturday, Sept. 13 for the Rim to Rim 7.5-mile event that begins and ends at Blue Lakes Country Club in the Snake River Canyon. Walkers begin at 9 a.m. and runners at 10 a.m. Early entry fee is $40 (visit spondoro.com) and day-of-race $45. Proceeds go to Habitat for Humanity of the Magic Valley.

Girls on the Run fall registration

The fall season of the Girls on the Run program begins Monday, Sept. 15. Registration forms came home from school with youngsters last week. The season runs Sept. 15-Oct. 23 and finishes Saturday, Oct. 25 with a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) run. Meeting times are twice weekly at 2:45 p.m. at Hemingway, Hailey, Woodside and Bellevue elementary schools.

Martial arts seminar with Larry Duke and Hailey Duke

Master Larry Duke and Ms. Hailey Duke from the Idaho Taekwondo Center in Boise and U.S. Ski Team will conduct a free Martial Arts Seminar Saturday, Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Blaine County Recreation District, Community Campus gym, Hailey.

Larry Duke, a former Sun Valley ski instructor, is a well-known Taekwondo instructor in the Gem State and Hailey Duke is his daughter. It will be an introduction to the Korean Martial Art of Taekwondo for beginners, and also an advanced workout for existing students. Sponsoring the event is Sun Valley Taekwondo.

Pepsi Punt, Pass and Kick

Wood River Youth Football hosts this year's Pepsi Punt, Pass and Kick local competition for boys and girls ages 8-15. The date is Saturday, Sept. 13 at 11 a.m., and the new location is the north Wood River Middle School soccer field, Hailey. Winners from each age group advance to the sectional competition Saturday, Sept. 27. Questions, call 471-0165 or 788-3439.
