Senior Center receives $229,000 challenge grant

The Blaine County Senior Center got a big boost this week from the Hayward Family Foundation, when Hope Hayward agreed to provide a $229,000 challenge grant for refurbishing and expanding the facility.

"The BCSS is basically a community campus for adults," said BCSS fundraiser and event coordinator Tammy Eaton. "We are one of only two certified senior centers in the state of Idaho." The BCSS touches the lives of 150 seniors every day, allowing many to live independent lives within the community.

Eaton said the grant will help the BCSS achieve its goal of adding 3,000 square feet in size, including an enlarged kitchen, dining hall and games area.

The BCSS has raised $9,000 dollars from the community already, and additional $15,000 formt eh Wood River Women's Charitable Foundation for the renovation.

DUI patrols underway

Law enforcement personnel are advising drivers not to make poor decisions by driving impaired this Labor Day weekend because agencies have stepped up patrols through Sept. 3.

"No matter what you drive—a passenger car, pickup, sport utility vehicle or motorcycle, if you're caught driving impaired—you will be arrested," said Kevin Bechen with Idaho Transportation Department's Office of Highway Operations and Safety.

Officers expect to arrest more impaired drivers through increased patrols statewide and make the holiday weekend safer for motorists.

Warm Springs power could be buried

The Ketchum Ranger District is seeking public input on an application to replace a portion of overhead power line in Warm Springs canyon with buried cable.

The proposal by Idaho Power would replace 6,200 feet of existing overhead line along a 20-foot-wide corridor through National Forest land south of Warm Springs Creek.

The overhead line would be replaced with 7,114 feet of buried cable along a 10-foot-wide right of way along Warm Springs Road.

The line replacement would begin at the first bridge west of Board Ranch, where the line crosses Warm Springs Creek, and would travel west, upstream, approximately 1.3 miles.

The abandoned poles would be cut down and left in place
