Thank you for Greg Stahl's excellent, in-depth article on domestic abuse. It was no doubt unpopular in many quarters.
Public resistance to this topic, which is just one chapter of the larger saga of imperiled women, is sizeable. I was talking to a male friend about it and his only response was that the only reason I champion women's causes is because I'm trying to get into their pants.
Recently, I was in a group of women and I brought up the topic again. I mentioned that in trying economic times there's an accompanying rise in divorce and domestic violence, that too many a man's response to a lost home or unemployment was to beat the wife. I was quickly told that this intrusion of reality was unwelcome, and that the topic was unsuitable for public or private consumption. I've stood up to worse.
I'd also like to thank the Advocates for being here. Most rural communities lack these services. They're faced with a near-impossible task. As with torture or child abuse, the body may mend but the spirit may remain broken forever. The destruction of human beauty and potential, the victims' imprisonment in a private hell, that's the crime.
