After being awarded a $100,000 Safe Routes to School grant from the Idaho Transportation Department last year, the city of Ketchum has designated two blocks in downtown Ketchum for improvements in the near future.
The west side of First Avenue, between Fifth and Seventh streets, will soon feature wider sidewalks, giving children a safer path from Fourth Street all the way to Hemingway Elementary School.
Ketchum City Engineer Steven Yearsley, contracted from Boise-based Forsgren Associates, said bidding for the project closes today at 11 a.m. and the contract would be awarded shortly thereafter.
According to Yearsley, start of the month-long construction is anticipated for mid-September and will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $110,000.
While the diagonal parking along these blocks will remain, the expanded sidewalks mean that the driving lanes will be reduced in width.
The block between Fifth and Sixth streets will have 10-foot sidewalks when construction is complete, while the adjacent block to the north will have eight-foot sidewalks.
Yearsley said that there will be no parking on the west side of First Avenue during construction, which should be completed around Oct. 15.
