Three local swimmers placed well in the 2008 Western Zone Swimming Championships, Aug. 5-9 in Gresham, Ore. The competition attracted 1,000 participants from 12 Western states.
Three local swimmers qualified for the championships: Racheal McGinnis (age 17), Megan Hayes (age 17) and Lena Friesen (age 13). They swam with the Snake River Swimming contingency.
McGinnis made it to the finals of five of her six events, placing fifth in the 200 backstroke, sixth in the 50 freestyle, sixth in the 100 backstroke, eighth in the 100 freestyle and eighth in the 200 freestyle. Hayes placed seventh in the 200 backstroke and 14th in the 100 backstroke. Friesen finished 11th in the 100 breaststroke and 14th in the 200 breaststroke.
McGinnis also swam on the Snake River Swimming Girls 18-and-under A relay team, which finished fourth in the 200 Medley, sixth in the 400 freestyle and seventh in the 200 freestyle. Hayes swam on the A relay team for the 200 and 400 medley, then swam on the B relay team for the 200 and 400 freestyle finishing 12th and 13th respectively. Friesen swam on the Girls 13-to-14 relay team in the 200 and 400 freestyle, finishing 11th and 14th respectively.
