James Richard Ray


James Ray

James Richard Ray, 74, of Nampa, entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of Aug. 14, 2008. He was born Aug. 28, 1933, to Clarence Ray and Frances Sanders in Jefferson City, Missouri. He married Kay Toothman in 1952 in Fulton, Missouri.

James joined the U.S. Navy in 1956. He later married Mildred Gainey of Charleston, S.C., where he was stationed upon his retirement of 20 years in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Vietnam War, involved in search and rescue. He and his team were responsible for rescuing many pilots. He belonged to the Fleet Reserve Association for another 10 years. Upon retirement, he moved to Hailey to be near his children, where he worked for the U.S. Forest Service and belonged to American Legion Post 0141 of Bellevue. He resided in Nampa for the past eight years. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting.

James is survived by his daughter, Linda McStay, of Nampa; son, Steve Ray and daughter-in-law Cindy Ray, both of Boise; grandsons Mark Jefferson of Boise, Jake Jefferson of Bellevue; granddaughters, Jamie and Krista Ray of Hailey; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two stepsons, Bruce and Wayne Richburg, and one stepdaughter, Linda Stukes, all of South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and wife, Mildred.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, at Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. Family and friends may leave remembrances at Cloverdale Funeral Home.
