Shop to the Top returns Saturday

Baldy summit climb ascends 3,200 feet

Canceled last August because of the Castle Rock Fire, the Shop to the Top climbs of Baldy are returning on Saturday, Aug. 23. The popular event is sponsored by The Elephant's Perch of Ketchum.

Leaving at 9 a.m. Aug. 23 is the Race Competitive Class, covering six miles from the Perch in downtown Ketchum and ascending the 3,200 feet from the bottom of River Run to the top of Baldy.

The non-competitive Sport Class (walk or casual run) leaves at 8 a.m. from River Run Lodge. Its distance is shorter, five miles, but the 3,200-foot climb is the same.

Awards will be presented to the fastest man and woman in each class, and there will be prize drawings for everyone. Weather permitting, participants can take the chairlift back down Baldy.

Early entry ($20) is accepted until Thursday, Aug. 21, at 6 p.m. Late entries ($30) are taken until 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22. And participants can pick up their race packets all day Friday at the Perch, on Sun Valley Road. No race-day entries will be taken. And you can't bring along your dog.

There were 107 participants in 2006, 57 in the Race Class and 50 in the Sport Class. Joe Savola, 41, of Boise, led the Race Class in 57:36 and Laurie Humbert, 40, of Salt Lake City, Utah, paced the women in 1.15:59. Sport Class winners were Natalia Tekiela, 28, of Sun Valley in 1.12:13 and David Hertel, 51, of Ketchum in 1.20:09.
