With only 60 high school students showing up for pre-season, the Wood River High School football program has decided to cancel the 2008-2009 freshman football season. Last year, WRHS fielded three football teams: a varsity, a junior varsity and a freshman team. This season, WRHS will have only a varsity and a JV team.
According to Wood River Athletic Activity Director John Rade, high schools that field more than two teams often require a roster of more than 100, if not 125, players. Without an adequate roster, it becomes a challenge not only to have a successful season, but also successful practices.
In order for a team to scrimmage, it needs at least 22 players just to field the two sides, and with seasonal injuries and illnesses, it's likely each team will need even more than 22.
Despite the cutbacks, Rade thinks it will be a good year for the WRHS football program.
"In the long run, I think it's good for the team," Rade said. "We'll have more depth."
He also said having only two teams will create a more competitive environment and will give the younger players far more experience.
"Obviously, if I had my choice, I would love to have 130 kids out here and have three teams," Rade said. "While that would be my ideal, I think this is still a win-win."
