Who had the smartest move?

Program seeks to reduce car trips

Participants in the Smart Moves Community Challenge, sponsored by Mountain Rides, avoided putting nearly 55,000 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere this summer by using alternative methods of transportation.

"We had tremendous participation this year," said Jason Miller, Mountain Rides executive director of transportation.

The program is held each summer to reduce single-occupancy car trips. Participants track their alternative transportation by bike, foot, carpool or bus on an official Trip Tracker, either online or manually. This summer, 11,037 trips were logged, accounting for more than 56,000 miles.

"Burning one gallon of gas emits on average 22.9 pounds of CO2," Miller said.

During a Smart Moves Community Challenge party on Sunday, Aug. 10, awards were handed out to winners in various categories at the Wicked Spud in Hailey. The celebration was the culmination of the three-month long challenge and was paired with the Ride the Rails event sponsored by the Blaine County Recreation District and Mountain Rides. The party featured live music from the Kim Stocking Band.

"The end-of-the-season party is a chance for our participants to celebrate their positive community impact and win great prizes from our sponsors while enjoying free food and drinks," Miller said.

This year the winners were Katie Feldman, the youth with the most miles at 1,135 miles, and Mary Morrison, who logged the most miles with 3,802 miles on her Trip Tracker. Logging the most trips was Pippi Konstanski, who logged 551 trips. The Stokes family won the most miles logged by a single family with 4,596 miles.

Tammy Martinez won a bike donated by Sturto's and Becky Stokes won a bike donated by the Elephant's Perch.
