Sports summary


Excellent times for Emmett triathlon

Wood River Valley and Camas County triathletes posted some excellent times during Emmett's Most Excellent Triathlon Saturday, Aug. 9 in the Treasure Valley.

There were 210 triathletes finishing the 51.5-kilometer or 31.9-mile Olympic distance (1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run) and 197 succeeding at the 25.5k or 15.8-mile Sprint Distance (500m swim, 20k bike, 5k run).

Ketchum's Bill McCann (2.08:26) was ninth overall and second in Men's 35-39 in the Men's Individual Olympic results topped by Boise's Kevin Everett (1.52:37). He won by eight minutes with Ryan Lindsay of Boise (2.01:48) third.

Other podium winners were Hailey's Jennifer Davis third in Women's 40-44 and Ketchum's Michael Barker third in Men's Clydesdale. Charley French of Ketchum won the Men's 80-and-up class in 3.10:29.

Women's Olympic winner was Jenny Tobin of Boise by four minutes in 2.10:24.

Fairfield's Dave Harrison won the Individual Sprint Adult race by 72 seconds in 1.01:36 and Hailey's Bob Lowry was third overall and first in Men's 50-54 in 1.03:49. Women's winner was Cara Fadel of Boise in 1.12:32.

Cash prizes went to the top finishers and age class leaders.

Sawtooth Century Bicycle Tour is Saturday

The Sawtooth Century Bicycle Tour returns to Ketchum and Sun Valley on Saturday, Aug. 16. Producing the event for the first time is the Blaine County Recreation District.

The BCRD Sawtooth Century is a fully supported one-day tour offering both half- and full-century (50- and 100- mile) routes and the return of the popular "King & Queen of the Mountain" competition.

Both rides start in downtown Ketchum and pass through Elkhorn and Sun Valley before heading north.

Half-century (50-mile) riders will proceed to the turn-around at Galena Lodge 23 miles north of Ketchum in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.  Full-century riders will continue up and over Galena summit en route to the turn-around at Alturas Lake.

Registration ($75) is available online at sportbaseonline.com Bib bag pick is Friday, Aug. 15 from 3-6 p.m. at the Elephant's Perch in Ketchum.

Coed Soccer League, Wednesday, Aug. 13: All games at Ketchum's Atkinson Park. At 5:30 p.m., Frieder vs. Rixon (lower field) and Funkhouser vs. Sutton (upper field). At 7 p.m., Mills vs. Dondero (lower field) and Miller/Zarkos vs. Conrad (upper field).

Perch's Shop to the Top returns Aug. 23

Canceled last August because of the Castle Rock Fire, the Shop to the Top climbs of Baldy are returning on Saturday, Aug. 23, sponsored by The Elephant's Perch of Ketchum.

Leaving at 9 a.m. Aug. 23 is the Race Competitive Class covering six miles from the Perch in downtown Ketchum and ascending the 3,200 feet from the bottom of River Run to the top of Baldy. The non-competitive Sport Class (walk or casual run) leaves at 8 a.m. from River Run Lodge. Its distance is shorter, five miles, but the 3,200-foot climb is the same.

Awards will be presented to the fastest man and woman in each class, and there will be prize drawings for everyone. Weather permitting, participants can take the chairlift back down Baldy.

Early entry ($20) is accepted until Thursday, Aug. 21 at 6 p.m. Late entries ($30) are taken Friday, Aug. 22 until 6 p.m. Register online at active.com.

DollarHide Bike Race results

Fairfield's Dave Harrison, organizer of the second annual DollarHide Bike Race Aug. 3 during the Camas County Fair, has announced the top results at the Fairfield City Park.

8-and-under girls: Bailey Peterson. Boys 8-13: First place to DollarHide Devo Team member Ben Luck, 7. In second place was Nick Roussos. Adults: Top three were Chris Christiansen, John Lockwood and Mark Hansen. Honorable mention went to Ken Backstrom.

Bigwood Women's Golf Invitational is Thursday

Bigwood at Thunder Spring hosts its Bigwood Women's Golf Invitational Thursday, Aug. 14. Format is two-woman best ball. Register ($65) and have a continental breakfast from 8-9 a.m. The shotgun start is at 9 a.m. Call 726-4024.

Hole-in-one at Elkhorn

Jim Greene carded a rare hole-in-one, his second, on Thursday, Aug. 7 at Elkhorn Golf Club. Elkhorn member Greene used a #7 iron from the gold tees on the sixth hole, measuring 151 yards. Witnesses were Michael Owens and Bill Stratton.

Middle school soccer, cross country, football practices to begin

Coaches of Wood River Middle School fall athletic teams have announced organizational meetings and first practices.

Middle school soccer for seventh- and eighth-grade students begins today, Wednesday, Aug. 13 from 5-6:30 p.m. at the middle school fields, Hailey, according to coach Adam Porth (450-9048). Bring water, ball and soccer gear including shin guards. The program has nearly 16 games scheduled for this fall. Paperwork needs to be finished by Thursday, Aug. 14 in order to play.

Middle school cross country has its first practice Wednesday, Aug. 20 at 8:30 a.m. at the middle school track. The program is open to boys and girls in the seventh and eighth grades. Daily workouts feature games, track work, hill climbs and backcountry runs. Contact Steve Poklemba 788-3051 or Miss Cassalia at 788-3612.

Middle school football begins Sunday, Aug. 17 with equipment checkout at 6 p.m. at the north entrance of the Hailey middle school. Regular-season practices begin Monday, Aug. 18 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the school's Chuck Turner football field. Interested players should arrive promptly Sunday night for equipment and plan to attend all practices next Monday through Friday, coach Rob Swanson (309-3215) said.

Dolphin swimmers wrap up successful summer

With more than two months of training and five regular-season meets under their belts, Blaine County Recreation District Dolphin swimmers traveled to Wendell for the Sagebrush Swim League championship meet on July 25.

The Dolphin girls bested eight other regional teams for the overall victory. Dolphin boys placed sixth among teams.

Outstanding individual performances included overall points' awards for the following swimmers in their age groups. Here are t hose award winners, along with the swimmers who broke team records July 25:

Ages 6-and-under: 1—Anja Jensen. New record: Anja Jensen 25-yard free 30.00 seconds

Ages 7-8: 6—Ethan Daves.

Major League Baseball new sponsor of Thompson Memorial golf

Tournament director Georgie Fenton announced Aug. 6 that Major League Baseball is an important new sponsor of the 32nd Danny Thompson Memorial golf tournament scheduled for Aug. 20-23 at Sun Valley. Major League Baseball joins over 30 corporate sponsors in the four-day benefit for leukemia and cancer research. Last year's event netted $730,000 divided equally between the Boise-based Mountain States Tumor Institute and the University of Minnesota Cancer Research Center. Sun Valley Resort plans to debut its new golf clubhouse during the tourney.

Sagebrush Stampede Sept. 13

The Sagebrush Equine Training Center in Hailey will host its first annual "Sagebrush Stampede" on Saturday, Sept. 13. It is a rodeo and horse show for adults and children who have physical or cognitive disabilities. There is no charge to the participants.

Events will include Western and English equitation, pole bending, barrel patterns, a trail course, ribbon races, and team paint branding.

Any equestrian with physical or cognitive disabilities is welcome to participate. Classes range from walking with leaders and sidewalkers to walk, trot, and canter. The Sagebrush Arena will provide board for horses overnight.

Ketchum youth tennis

Ketchum's Atkinson Park held its youth tennis championships for 30 doubles teams and 50 singles players last Thursday and Friday. Results:
