Mike Hanley of Ketchum won the slalom event at the local Black Butte Classic water ski tournament Saturday.

He also broke and set a new USA Water Ski Association Rocky Mountain area men's five slalom record 1-at-39 off a 75-foot ski rope.

The record was previously set by Martin Woodbury from Colorado on July 14, 2001.

"Skiing 38 off is a huge feat of athleticism, and to ski it at a tournament and break a record is fantastic," said fellow skier Alison Poulsen.

Idaho skiers Hanley, Poulsen, John Urban and Gary Storey will compete at the U.S. Water Ski Nationals Aug. 14-15 in Florida.
