Major League Baseball new sponsor of Thompson Memorial golf

Tournament director Georgie Fenton announced today that Major League Baseball is an important new sponsor of the 32nd Danny Thompson Memorial golf tournament scheduled for Aug. 20-23 at Sun Valley. Major League Baseball joins over 30 corporate sponsors in the four-day benefit for leukemia and cancer research. Last year's event netted $730,000 divided equally between the Boise-based Mountain States Tumor Institute and the University of Minnesota Cancer Research Center. Sun Valley Resort plans to debut its new golf clubhouse during the tourney.

YMCA Golf Classic results

Here are the results from Saturday's Wood River Community YMCA Golf Classic tournament at Elkhorn Golf Club. There was a four-way tie for first place, which resulted in a scorecard playoff:

First place—Spyder Stevens, Bud Yorkin, Kevin Cincotta and Mike Pirzynski 123, -21.

Second place—The youth team of Jimmy Hague, Peter Atkinson, Daniel Sundali and Tye Lampl 123, -21.

Third place—Brit Palmedo, Peter Palmedo, Suzanne Williams and Latham Williams 123, -21.

Closest to the pin—Jack Dies, David Lipman, Michael Owens and Daniel Sundali.

Straightest drives—Sue Fuller and Brian Town.

Long drives—Brit Palmedo and Scott MacGuffie.

Hole-in-one at Elkhorn

John Davis carded a rare hole-in-one Friday, Aug. 1 at Elkhorn Golf Club, using a driver on the par-3, 161-yard #11 hole. Witnesses were Elkhorn Golf club head golf professional Shane Galles, Steve Mowry and Paul Dugan.

Here's an update of today's coed soccer and slow-pitch softball games:

Coed Soccer League, Wednesday, Aug. 6: At 5:30 p.m. at Ketchum's Atkinson Park, Dondero vs. Miller/Zarkos and at 7 p.m., Funkhouser vs. Frieder. At 5:30 p.m. at Elkhorn's Sagewillow Farms, Mills vs. Conrad and at 7 p.m., Sutton vs. Rixon.

Hailey Coed Softball League, Wednesday, Aug. 6: At 5:45 p.m., Power Engineers vs. Bishop Builders/Color Haus. At 7 p.m., Evans Plumbing v Smith Sport Optics.

High school offers volleyball camp

Wood River High School's volleyball team is offering a two-day volleyball clinic for girls in grades 5-9 on Monday, Aug. 11 and Tuesday, Aug. 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon in the Hailey high school gym. Cost is $25 for both days. Proceeds benefit the WRHS volleyball team. All girls are welcome. Sign up Monday, Aug. 11 at 9 a.m. at the high school or call Angela Coleman at 720-5382.

Middle school volleyball tryouts set for Aug. 13

Wood River Middle School volleyball coach Beth Andrews (720-0442) has announced tryouts for seventh- and eighth-grade girls begin Wednesday, Aug. 13 from 9-11 a.m. in the middle school gym.

New bicycles add up to "Miles of Smiles"

Thanks to the generosity of valley residents Brian Ross and Susan Reinstein, the "Miles of Smiles" program has delivered 14 new Specialized bicycles to deserving Wood River Valley youth. The program is a team effort featuring bike acquisition and assembly by The Elephant's Perch of Ketchum and distribution of bikes by the Blaine County Recreation District. "I can't put into words the excitement on the kids' faces when they saw their new bikes," said Rec District recreation director Dave Keir.
