Jones-Wilkins wins Vermont 100-Mile Enduro

Wearing bib #1 and holding up his end of the bargain, Community School headmaster Andy Jones-Wilkins, 40, successfully defended his championship in the Vermont 100-Mile Endurance Run held on the Silver Hill Meadow trails near Brownsville, Vt. July 19.

Due to confusion with the way the initial race results were presented on the Vermont 100 Web site, the Express last week incorrectly stated that Jones-Wilkins finished ninth.

Jones-Wilkins, averaging about 9:40 per mile, won in 16 hours, 7 minutes and 52 seconds. He defeated runner-up Kevin Sullivan of Andover, Mass. (16.15:19) by seven minutes and 27 seconds. There were 158 finishers at 100 miles and another 21 at the shorter 100-kilometer distance. Jones-Wilkins was also last year's overall winner of the Vermont 100 on the hilly backcountry course in 15:53.19. The 100-mile course record set by Leigh Schmitt in 2004 was 14.53:09.

David Souza of Brookline, Mass., brother-in-law of Mountain Express reporter Jon Duval, finished 151st overall and 30th in his 30-39 age class with a 29.37:58 time after 100 miles.

The course climbed and descended between 14,000 and 15,000 feet. It benefited Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports.
