Spudman is good to valley triathletes

Davis couple, Gundy finish 32-mile test

Hailey's Bart Davis and Jennifer Davis came through with flying colors in Saturday's 22nd annual Burley Lions Club Spudman Triathlon that attracted nearly 2,000 athletes.

So did Susan Gundy of Hailey. The course featured a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40k bike ride and 10k run for 31.9 miles.

Bart Davis, 38, finished sixth in the Men's 35-39 class and 32nd overall with a time of 2.04:10. His splits were 17:32 swim, 59:56 bike and 43:27 run.

Elite Men's winner Heath Thurston, 30, of Orem, Utah, came home in 1.46:44 with splits of 12:55, 54:42 and 37:39.

Jennifer Davis, 40, was the second-place winner in Women's 40-44 and the 20th woman overall with a time of 2.20:40. Splits were 15:16 swim, 1.09:45 bike and 51:33 run.

The women's winner was Johanna Nielsen, 30, of Salt Lake City in 2.04:02, about eight seconds ahead of Bart Davis in 31st place overall. Nielsen's split times were 15:54 swim, 1.05:02 bike and 39:51 run.

Susan Gundy, 53, was eighth in her class with a final duathlon time of 2.17:26. Unfortunately she didn't get to do the triathlon because of a tragic accident that claimed the life of 60-year-old Donald Morehouse of Provo, Utah in the early-morning swim portion.

Gundy explained in an e-mail to the Express, "A man in the sixth wave on the swim went under and died.

"Those of us in the seventh wave (nearly 400) female 50-plus and all the team members were in the water awaiting the gun when we were called back to shore before they recovered the body. After finding his body the race director decided on a duathlon for those of us in the seventh wave. Needless to say, it was so very sad."

Morehouse, according to a New York Times feature article Monday about triathlon deaths, was at least the seventh or eighth triathlete to die this year during an event, all of them in the swim portions.
