Three fifth graders at Ernest Hemingway Elementary School are headed to Washington D.C. to pick up a first place award.
The budding videographers Tara Burchmore, Grace Gorham and Helene Hawes made a five-minute film under the guidance of technology teacher Scott Slonin. The film, "How Technology Helps Us Learn," became a finalist the contest, "Empowered Education," part of the video program of the eSchool News Network, which is produced with support from the Pearson Foundation. This week they were informed that they had won the country-wide elementary school division.
"The kids showed how anything that helps people solve problems," Slonin said. "The kids wrote a script. It's a little more professional than the one we won in 2007, for the annual Kid Witness News New Vision."
All three girls will go with Slonin and family members to Washington, D.C. in late September to pick up their award. They will also be given a tour of the city, attend a six hour symposium on video making and attend a dinner and awards ceremony. As well, they will meet with legislators to discuss how "important technology is in school," Slonin said. "That's why (eSchool News and the Pearson Foundation) does this."
