Recall petition making rounds

Voters have until September 19

Despite recent vocal opposition from the Sawtooth Board of Realtors and the Wood River Economic Partnership, former Ketchum council member Anne Corrock is pushing ahead with the petition she authored for the recall of Mayor Randy Hall.

In an interview yesterday, Corrock said that the petition is being circulated by around a dozen people.

While she wasn't sure how many names have been added to the original 20 necessary to get the petition officially underway, she said she thought she could get the required 418 signatures of registered voters.

Corrock would need these by Sept. 19 in order to get the recall on the November ballot.

This number is based on a percentage of the number of citizens who participated in the last city election.

"It shouldn't be an easy thing to do," Corrock said of the recall process. "But I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't think it was possible."

According to City Clerk Sandra Cady, for the recall to be successful, there would need to be as many or more votes in support of the recall than originally were cast for Hall back in 2005 when he was elected.

This means that at least 503 votes for the recall would be needed. A majority of the ballots cast in the recall vote would also be required.

Cady said that the required number of signatures for the petition would have to be collected at least 45 days prior to the November 4 election to get the recall on the ballot.

In her list of grievances printed in the recall petition, Corrock stated that Hall doubled his salary during a budget crisis.

Hall has since rebutted that the increase in the mayor's salary was the result of a City Council vote prior to the last election. This increase, the first in six years, pushed Hall's monthly salary from $1,500 to $3,000.

"The city's been spending too freely—they're constantly hiring consultants and outsourcing jobs, such as bringing in special attorneys for these hotel applications," Corrock said in a June interview. "We hired him to do a job: manage the city's money and staff in the best interest of the electorate."

While Corrock stated that Hall has not listened to the electorate, Hall has countered that he has been pursuing the agenda he promised during his mayoral campaign in 2005.
