The All Star Game Moments

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

Tuesday night at 6 p.m., I prepare to settle back and watch the 2008 Major League Baseball All-Star Game live from New York City. I slip into my "fat clothes," make some popcorn and pour a large diet soda over ice into a huge mug. Then I lock the door, unplug the phone, flop down in my recliner chair, grab the remote and turn on the TV. My entire focus would be on the game. Nothing will deter me from studying and analyzing every pitch and action in the game.

"Wow, that was a close play at second! He really muddied up his uniform, didn't he?"

Oh, no! I forgot to do the laundry! (Run to the laundry room, sort clothes into darks and whites, throw in the detergent, set the dials and start the washer.)

"There's a lot of electricity in the air as Bill steps in to bat."

Sonava! I've got to pay that electric bill by tomorrow! (Go to desk, fumble through the mail, find bill, write check, search for a stamp and get in car to mail it at the nearest mailbox. Go all the way to the post office and immediately get into a conversation. Break away, get back in car, rush home and get back just in time to put on the drying.)

"The score is 2 to 2, so..."

So? I gotta' sew that button on or I won't have any pants to wear tomorrow. (Go to backroom to get the sewing kit, prick finger with needle, get bandage and begin the process.)

"Ichiro steps into the batter's box..."

For the love of...! I've got to get the grand daughter's present wrapped and find a box to send it tomorrow! (Wrap present, get box, address it and put the rest of stamps on it and go out and put it in car for U.P.S. tomorrow.)

"It's 3 to 3 now as Wright comes to the plate."

Plate! I promised her I'd return that plate tonight! (Wash plate, run to car, drive to Elkhorn, go inside plate recipient's house to chat, make excuses to go, run to car, return home, take out drying and start folding.)

"We're now in the 15th inning now and the National League has a new battery."

Batteries! I've forgot to get batteries for the tape recorder for the interview! (Drive to Veltex, buy batteries and return home.)

"It's a fly ball, Morneau tags at third...he scores! A.L. wins 4 to 3. Finally, we leave the glorious columns of Yankee Stadium and..."

Column! I forgot to write the column! ! Nice talking to you!
