Tennis fireworks light up Sun Valley

Holiday tournament returns for 110 players

On a beautiful Fourth of July weekend, holiday tennis returned to the Wood River Valley with the staging of the Lyle Pearson Fourth of July Tennis Championships on the Sun Valley Tennis Club courts.

It was tough to keep everybody's attention on the local action during Sunday's finals, what with the riveting Wimbledon men's singles final between Nadal and Federer on television in the pro shop.

But there was some pretty decent tennis at Sun Valley.

Stanley Sarapanich of California won 11-player Men's Open Singles 6-4, 6-3 over David Perry of Jerome. Sarapanich and Perry teamed up to capture the five-team Men's Open Doubles in two tiebreakers over Ethan Asher of Boise and George Maurtua of Ketchum.

There were 110 players and 180 entrants filling 16 classes in the three-day meet, according to tournament director Perry. The other tournament host was Mark Frisby, Sun Valley Resort director of tennis.

Sponsors were Lyle Pearson of Boise, Volvo, Sturtevants Mountain Outfitters, Wilson Racquet Sports and Tennis Warehouse. Open prize money ranged to $400 for Men's Open Singles ($200 finalists) and $300 for Men's Open Doubles.

Next up at Sun Valley Tennis Club is the Labor Day Open Tournament Aug. 29-Sept. 1. Here are top results from last weekend's Independence Day holiday meet:
