Memo to Allen & Co.

While you are here in our valley this week making decisions that will affect all of us in the months ahead, I would like to make a suggestion. Perhaps you could find time to sit in silence for a while in these beautiful surroundings and look clearly at what part your own actions, and those of the organizations you represent, have contributed to the situations our world finds itself in now.

Power, I'm sure, is a heady thing, easily justified in this competitive world, and probably hard to rein in. It must be very difficult to be objective about one's own actions and easy to look away from their effects on others when material and personal rewards are so great. But perhaps now, as the repercussions from these years of unbelievable corporate manipulation and greed, of the support of political leaders and decisions that benefit the few to the detriment of us all, of personal and corporate victories that degrade and destroy the very environment that sustains us are becoming more evident, maybe now you could take some time to think more clearly?

We really are one world. That's easy to overlook through the illusion of separateness and privilege. But in the end there is no protection, no safe haven, for anyone. We all, whether scrabbling for existence in a 'third world' country or living behind locked gates in luxury, rely on the same air, the same earth, and on each other, for our very existence. And the rest of us also rely on you. So as we all are doing what we can, making our own sacrifices, maybe it's time that you did, also. You have earned and inherited positions of leadership—so please, now, lead. And leave your heirs, as well as all of our children, something to be really proud of, something that really matters—a truly democratically functioning government and country, a healing world, and compassion and support for ALL its inhabitants and the generations to come.
