Ratings targeted at scratch golfers

The U.S. Golf Association announced on Wednesday the ratings for one of the new additions to the Sun Valley Resort, the White Clouds Golf Course, the first nine holes of which are scheduled to open later this summer.

The U.S.G.A. determines a "slope rating" as a measurement of the difficulty of a course for "bogey" golfers relative to the course rating. The course rating describes how difficult the course will be for "scratch" golfers.

According to the U.S.G.A.: "The male scratch golfer hits his tee shots an average of 250 yards and can reach a 470-yard hole in two shots. The female scratch golfer can hit her tee shots an average of 210 yards and can reach a 400-yard hole in two shots."

For the White Clouds Course, the men's course ratings, based on 18 holes, range from 68.4 to 76.6, while the slope ratings range from 128 to 143. For women, the course ratings range from 71 to 80.6 and the slope ratings from 121 to 146.

For all golf courses, the minimum slope rating is 55 and maximum 155, with the average difficulty 113.

In addition to the new golf course, Sun Valley Co. this summer will also open a new golf/Nordic skiing clubhouse, an expanded practice facility, an 18-hole putting course and a music pavilion that will host concerts and the Sun Valley Summer Symphony.
