The Blaine County Hunger Coalition dispensed more than 20,000 pounds of food on Saturday, June 29 in Hailey. The Coalition teamed up with the Boise-based Freedom Resource Center and the Idaho Foodbank to give away free food baskets. The food baskets included such items as meat, bread, vegetables and non-perishables.

The baskets were donated to 138 families, benefiting 576 Blaine County residents.

"The large turnout confirmed the number of families struggling to make ends meet in our community, with its high cost of living, stagnant wages and increasing food and gas prices," Director of the Hunger Coalition Jeanne Liston said. "The Coalition has seen a drastic increase in requests for food assistance over the last several months and is having a hard time meeting the need. The mobile food pantry will ensure that children are temporarily safe from having to go to bed with empty stomachs."

Liston said that she hopes this could be become an annual event.

"We will definitely be working with Freedom Resource Center in the future, and as long as they are willing to come back we are willing to organize it."
