Pletcher conquers Pennsylvania hills

News from some top local cyclists

Riding with some of this country's best 25-and-under male cyclists, Ketchum's Reid Pletcher had great experience during the inaugural American Eagle Tour of Pennsylvania Bike Race that ended Sunday, June 29 in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Pletcher, 19, a 2007 Wood River High School graduate, was one of six riders on the California Giant Berry Farms/Specialized team. It was one of 20 teams of elite international cyclists under age 25 that pedaled 450 miles in six days across Pennsylvania.

Out of 89 cyclists on the final list, Pletcher finished 35th overall with a cumulative time of 14 hours, 50 minutes and 44 seconds. It was 7:20 behind stage racer winner and "Best Sprinter" David Veilleux of the Kelly Benefit/Medifast team.

That put Pletcher second on the Berry Farms/Specialized team in the final standings behind Max Jenkins 14th and ahead of Tyler Dibble 53rd, Chance Noble 63rd and Julian Martinez 68th. In the final four stages, Pletcher placed 14th, 23rd, 29th and 32nd.

Hailey's Cody Peterson had a strong weekend June 28-29 at the Deer Valley National Mountain Bike Series in Utah. He finished ninth in cross-country Saturday and ninth in short track Sunday. The field consisted of some of the best North American riders jockeying for spots on the Olympic teams of their countries.
