Will Ketchum Farmers’ Market be relocated?

Debate postponed to next week

The location of the Ketchum Farmers' Market, which takes place every Tuesday from 2:30 to 6 p.m. on Fourth Street between Walnut and East avenues, is still in contention.

Although the matter was on the agenda for the Ketchum City Council's special meeting on Monday night, Councilman Baird Gourlay recommended that it be postponed to a meeting on July 7.

Initially, Councilman Larry Helzel asked that the issue be removed from the agenda entirely, because he believed it could be worked out between city staff, market representatives and area business owners.

But Debbie Burns, owner of Burnsie's Boca clothing store and chairwoman of the city Planning & Zoning Commission, said the issue deserves more attention.

"Housekeeping items are just as important as the big issues," Burns said at the meeting. "If they are simply ignored, they can have serious consequences and can put people out of business."

Burns has stated previously that the location of the market has a negative impact to her business, which is on the north side of Fourth Street on the same block as the weekly event.

Because the street is closed during the market, there is no parking available in front of Burns' clothing shop and the stalls can block the view of her store from the street, she contends.
